FIBROMYALGIA - Acupuncture Comments from books
Fibromyalgia for Dummies
Ronald Staud, M.D.
Several key clinical studies on acupuncture have shown that acupuncture is effective against the pain of fibromyalgia. For example, in a study on fibromyalgia patients reported in 2006 in Mayo clinic proceedings. The researchers placed 25 of the patients in the acupuncture group and 25 in the control group receiving stimulated acupuncture. These researchers found that the symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, and pain were significantly reduced in the acupuncture group compared to the control group. It’s worth nothing that some studies find that patients don’t obtain significant relief from their symptoms with acupuncture.
According to the center for disease control and prevention(CDC), about 2 million people per year in the United States use acupuncture as a therapy.
Living Well with Chronic Fatigue symptom and Fibromyalgia
Mary J. Shomon
One way acupuncture work is by helping change the body’s pain perceptions and releasing endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. The impact of acupuncture on CFS has not been extensively studied. But even through there haven’t been large-scale clinical trials. There is fairly strong evidence that acupuncture can be effective in treating fibromyalgia symptoms.
FIBROMYALGIA & CHRONIC MYOFACIAL PAIN
BY DEVIN STARLANYL, MARY ELLEN COPELAND
Classical acupuncture teaches that wherever there is pain, the chi(life force and energy) is not flowing freely. For the free flow of informational substances, e.g., neurotransmitters, to take place between muscles and connective tissue, the free of chi is essential. Acupuncture may be effective for treating both osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia(FMS). For some FMS patients, ten to fourteen acupuncture sessions seem to provide benefits.
100 Questions & Answers About Fibromyalgia
By Sharon Ostalecki, Ph.D.
Acupuncture acts on pain-sensing nerve-fiber transmission in two ways. One way is by increasing the strength of inhibitory(pain-blocking) circuits in the brainstem. The brainstem circuits at the top of spinal cord act as pain gates that are closed by acupuncture. The other way is by reducing the excitability of pain circuits in the spinal cord and brain. These acupuncture-induced alterations reduce the hypersensitivity of the nervous system that develops in chronic pain. It also works by calming the chronically hyperaroused sympathetic nervous system, which reduces the muscle contractions present in fibromyalgia.
In all these systems, the treatment improves circulation of chi, blood, and fluids. Treatment also helps the body’s mechanisms for maintaining a steady state, thus moving you toward better balance and better health.
Fibromyalgia (The First Year)
Claudia Craig Marek
In one study of 60 FM patients, all patients received amitriptyline for pain and at bedtime. One group of 20 also had a weekly thirty-minute acupuncture session; a second group of 20 had a thirty-minute weekly mock acupuncture session, with treatment in areas not believed to have any effect on pain, depression and mental health, and results were seen within a month, and lasted as long as sixteen weeks.
A Swiss study of 70 patients found that 75 percent showed improvement in their disease with acupuncture treatment. And researchers at the Federal university of Sao Paulo, Brazil, have done study showing that acupuncture can help relieve symptoms such as pain and depression in fibromyalgia.
The Truth about Fibromyalgia
W. ClayMcCord. M.D.
Acupuncture
Since Martin’s observations in his 2006 Mayo clinic study, acupuncture has found acceptance in the medical community for the treatment of FM, Unexpectedly, fatigue and anxiety also improved. The mechanism remains to be elucidated but one review disclosed that neuroimaging has shown activation of pain inhibitory regions stimulated by acupuncture points that are not anatomically predictable. Furthermore, the analgestic effect is partially transferable via spinal fluid implying a chemical meditation.
Reversing Fibromyalgia
Dr. Joe M. Elrod
Perhaps the greatest determining factor in the success of failure of these treatment is the experience of practitioner. Inexperienced acupuncturists or those not familiar with fibromyalgia may do more harm than good. Make sure you find someone who is probably trained and licensed.
Fibromyalgia
Sharon Ostalecki
Acupuncture has some advantages ore traditional western therapies. For one thing, there are no side effects to speak of from acupuncture. There can be minor bruising and local irritation, but serious side effect are rare. The most serious potential side effect is organ puncture, but that should never happen. In contrast, all medications have side effects. At different points in their recovery, many fibromyalgia patients feel pain when pressure is put on trigger points. In fact, people with fibromyalgia often do not tolerate physical therapy or muscle manipulation therapies because they are painful. But with the acupuncture the amount of local tissue trauma is minimized, and the needle insertion points are at a distance from the actual tender points.
I have observed beneficial effects from acupuncture in patients suffering with fibromyalgia. These patients report less pain, less use of pain medication, and more stamina. Sometimes the benefits are most notable as a more restorative sleep pattern. Often after acupuncture, patient, report higher energy levels and lower anxiety level. Even if their pain remains, these benefits improve their quality of life. This may be partly due to the constitutional effects of acupuncture – normalizing effects on wide range of body functions. Dietary advice, psychological council, individual exercise plans, and recommendation, to optimize sleep complete the treatment plan. It seeks to identify imbalance in the system and restore harmony. The acupuncture needle is the tool whose proper placement encourages a new equilibrium for the individual. Acupuncture is a safe tool for treating fibromyalgia patients. Its effectiveness is substantiated by scientific, traditional, and anecdotal reports. This ancient practice represents the medicine of the future.

Rhinitis
8 Constitution Medicine offers a particularly effective treatment for chronic rhinitis. The most fundamental cause of chronic rhinitis as determined within the framework of 8 Constitution Medicine is the overall weakening of automatic nervous system. As the balance within the nervous system shatters, myriad disorders arise. Respiratory system in particular gets easily disrupted and becomes vulnerable to attacks from outside, in an almost immediate response to the failure on part of automatic nervous system. And nose is the member of this system most exposed to such external influences. Below are brief introduction to and 8 Constitutional analysis of the nature of three variations of chronic rhinitis.
1.
Vasmotor rhinitis is caused by the over-action of parasympathetic nerves, which leads to the expansion of the blood vessels surrounding nasal mucous membrane, which in turn results in increased blood flow. On one hand, this pumps up mucous secretion and triggers runny hose. On the other hand, mucous membrane swell-up leads to nasal congestion. Vasomotor rhinitis is symptomatically indistinguishable from allergic rhinitis. Out of the 8 constitutions, it is prevalent among Hepatonians and Cholecystonians.
2.
On the contrary, atrophic rhinitis patients suffer from dryness and shriveling of nasal mucous membrane. Often, such progressive nasal disorders such as chronic sinusitis and hypertropic rhinitis run its full course and develop into the final stage that is atrophic rhinitis. Aside the runny nose typical of all rhinitis, atrophic rhinitis deprive moisture from mucous membrane and the dryness resulting thereby can be painful a great deal.
8 Constitution Medicine finds the root of this problem in innately “strong” sympathetic nervous system and lung’s energetic system. To be ‘strong’ here means that these two organ systems are naturally bit out of optimal balance and easy to overact. Pulmotonians, disposed with these two conditions, are especially prone to atrophic rhinitis. Atrophic rhinitis patients must avoid living in dry area, engaging in exercises that are too strenuous, and eating nuts and dairy products. Long-term 8 Constitutional treatments along with strict observance of diet and other restrictions improve the condition a great deal.
3.
Allergic rhinitis is the most common variety of rhinitis. Nearly three out of ten adults suffer from allergic rhinitis. Among the 8 Constitutions, Pancreatonian, Hepatonian, Cholecystonian, and Pulmutonian are all prone to allergic rhinitis. As opposed to the other two examined above, its root cause is unclear. A number of chemical therapies and ummunotherapy are available, but serve only as a temporary relief rather than the permanent cure.
Conclusion
Chronic rhinitis is an external indication that there is an systematic imbalance somewhere in one’s body. 8 Constitution Medicine, accordingly, focuses not on subduing external symptoms, but on rectifying the systematic failures from which the symptoms spring. Rhinitis, allergic and nonallergic alike, is not just a local problem isolated in the nose. The true problem rests on the systematic failure of cooperation and communication between the nervous system and various organs. I attribute 8 Constitution Medicine’s effective treatment of chronic rhinitis to its emphasis on holistic and systematic, not local and isolated, approach to human physiology. Moreover, as 8 Constitution Medicine formulates constitution-specific treatment and thereby pinpoints precise foci of trouble for each individual, it is bound to be more effective than a broad treatment devised on the understanding only of surface symptoms.

Dr. Kim - Profile
Dr. Kim's uncle was a renowned practitioner of oriental medicine. Spending hours upon hours of his childhood leisure at his uncle's little office, Kim witnessed his uncle treating and curing countless patients with myriad illnesses. Oriental Medicine, and its immense healing power evinced through his uncle's practice, deeply impressed the young boy. In his teenager days, Dr. Kim was a voracious reader of oriental philosophy, oriental medicine, and material science of all kinds. He graduated from Dongguk University in South Korea with high honors and went on to build clinical experience in oriental medicine under the tutelage of many imminent practitioners, including his own uncle.
Dr. Kim found his passion in a branch of oriental medicine titled "8 Constitution Medicine," a unique Korean medicinal system developed on the basis of traditional oriental medicine. Dr. Kim dedicated much of his medical career in the study and practice of 8 Constitution Medicine. The scope of his practice encompasses not only pain management, but both internal and external medicines. As a result, he has successfully treated the patients suffering from various illnesses, such as chronic digestive and respiratory disorder, hepatitis, and cancer of many varieties, to name a few.
Dr. Kim's practice fully reflects the philosophy of 8 Constitution Medicine. In treating his patients, Dr. Kim first grasps each patient's unique physiological character - termed "Constitution" in 8 Constitution Medicine - and tailors his treatment to the individual patient's needs and wants. In doing so, Dr. Kim goes far beyond merely addressing the surface symptoms. Formulating a patient-specific diet plan, and informing patient of the habits that are beneficial or harmful to his constitution, are all integral parts of Dr. Kim's comprehensive treatment. Adding such a simple article of food as garlic or coffee to your daily diet, for instance, may have a far-reaching impact on one's health, depending on the consumer's constitution. This is why Dr. Kim aims at not only treating symptoms, but informing the patients of their constitutions and how to best conduct their health. The ultimate ideal of 8 Constitution Medicine is the restoration of person's general well-being. Dr. Kim's practice has been faithful to this vision, as numerous patients with dragging chronic illnesses have experienced much improvement under his care. Dr. Kim helped over seven thousand patients suffering from chronic obesity, publishing his view on obesity in the best-selling book, "Die or Diet," in 2006.
Dr. Kim is determined to propagate Oriental Medicine and its potent branch of 8 Constitutional Medicine to the American public. He will labor toward this goal more rigorously than any other acupuncturist in the region, through his unwavering commitment to restore health and happiness to the suffering thousands. Dr. Kim’s childhood admiration for his uncle has been a driving force behind this commitment.
After practicing Oriental Medicine for the past few years in Ventura, Dr. Kim has launched a new clinic in Los Angeles. With twenty years of medical expertise, Dr. Kim, the author of a best-selling discourse on Weight Loss and Martial Art Master of Taekwondo 5th degree black belt, puts his best skills at our community members’ disposal. We cordially invite you to take full advantage of Dr. Kim’s expert care.

OUR APPROACH (1)
Vegan lifestyle has long been touted as a surefire way to promote health and wellbeing. Reports from the vegetarian converts, however, speak of markedly different things. Some rave at how healthy and light-weighted they’ve come to feel, while the others talk of increasing fatigue and the feeling of “sinking down”. These different individual reactions to a uniform diet pattern – vegetarianism – indicate that there are fundamental biophysical divides between people.
8 Constitution Medicine identifies and categorizes these divides into eight subsets, each of which is a particular ‘constitution’ (hence the phraseology, ‘8 Constitution’). This is not an arbitrary analysis of cutting-the-pudding-the-way-you-want variety, decided almost always on sweeping survey over a limited sample. Rather, it is an objective categorization of inborn physiological differences, rooted on the detection of a particular type of pulse signature emanating from radial artery.
Existence of 8 Constitutions is an observational fact. To ask as to how there could be eight distinct constitutions is another question and will not be dealt in this exposition. For our purpose, it suffices to say that the analysis of these biological categories has been conducted rigorously by the practitioners of 8 constitution medicine, who synthesized meridian theory of traditional oriental medicine and knowledge of western medicine to yield fine-grained investigation into the nature of each constitution and to discover therapeutic application of the theory. The concept of constitution medicine was announced in 1894, ten years before the discovery of hormone. 8 Constitution Medicine as a systematic medicine coalesced into its present form in 1962. Please refer to the separate entry titled ‘History of 8 Constitution Medicine’ for the detailed account on its historical development.
At this juncture, the following question should be forthcoming in your mind: what does it mean to be born with a particular constitution? What does it amount to having one constitution rather than another, biologically speaking?

OUR APPROACH (2)
Constitution is broadly broken into two sorts, depending on which one of the two sub-nervous systems of Autonomic nervous system – sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves – exerts relative dominance upon the other. These are further broken down into eight categories, depending on which internal organs exert relative dominance upon one another.
Autonomic nervous system regulates the bodily functions that are operated without our conscious control, such as heart rate, perspiration, respiration rate, and digestion. Autonomic nervous system consists of two sub-systems, namely sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Sympathetic nervous system becomes dominant when we are under emotional and psychological pressure. When we ready ourselves for confessing to a loved one or for delivering a speech before a roomful of audience, for instance, sympathetic nervous system takes over, resulting in short breath, increasing perspiration, fast heart beat, and drying up of saliva. Parasympathetic nervous system, on the other hand, assumes control in the absence of pressure.
8 Constitution Medicine uses the innate predominance of one sub-nervous system over the other as the first differentiating parameter, and break down human physiology broadly into two categories. Out of the eight categories of 8 Constitutions, four of them fall under the supercategory based on the relative dominance of sympathetic nervous system, and the other four fall under the supercategory based on the relative dominance of parasympathetic nervous system.
Even at this level of categorization, constitutional analysis yields some useful information, such as which food group is beneficial to a person based on his constitution. Take, for example, coffee. Articles abound citing various researches, some of which extol and others denounce the various virtues and vices of coffee. How could one article of food be healthy and unhealthy at the same time, on so many accounts?
8 Constitution Medicine focuses on coffee’s effect on sub-nervous system. Coffee stimulates sympathetic nervous system, and strengthens its dominance if consumed regularly for a prolonged period. For this reason, it is unhealthy to the supercategory of individuals marked by naturally stronger sympathetic nervous system. To those individuals under this supercategory whom are further classified as “Pulmutonian”, coffee will exerts especially detrimental effect by upsetting the balance between two sub-nervous systems, which will lead to the emergence of various anomalous symptoms. In contrast, coffee could be quite beneficial to the individuals falling under the other supercategory characterized by stronger parasympathetic nervous system, in particular those with Hepatonia constitution. Constitution-conscious diet can preemptively undercut the growth of chronic, recalcitrant illnesses that are too often rooted in eating a wrong kind of food. For now, however, let’s get back to the discussion of how constitutions are categorized and identified.
The two broad supercategories, outlined on the basis of the power-balance between two sub-nervous systems of Autonomic Nervous System, break further down into eight categories according to the power-balance between organs. This finer-grained categorization is founded on both the oriental theories of internal medicine and the human anatomy and physiology of western medicine. To grasp that how the methodological synthesis of two medical traditions has been made, let us briefly touch on their difference.
