OUR APPROACH (6)
8 Constitution Medicine casts the data gathered in western tradition in the framework of oriental medicine’s Meridian System. Meridian Theory has been rigorously studied and applied in treatments for 2500 years in the east. That the theory has not changed much in its main claims attests to its stability and reliability. According to this theory, Meridian is the branching pathways through which energy states of organ systems are expressed on the body surface. To employ an analogy once again, if we liken the whole of nervous system as a system of phone lines, and further liken the endocrine system as a physical network of distribution/delivery system, Meridian maybe likened to radio communication system that uses intangible radio wave as a means of information transfer. Unlike radio wave transmission, however, Meridian consists of a set network of pathway. Western empirical science has yet been unable to deliver a sufficiently tangible account of Meridian Theory. The theory’s reliability in actual application, however, is widely recognized, and a number of biophysics divisions at reputable medical schools such as Harvard and Johns Hopkins are laboring to render the theory more physicality. For more details on Meridian Theory, refer to the ‘Acupuncture’ section.
